While procedures like dental crowns or orthodontics allow you to alter the appearance of your smile, dental veneers remain one of the most affordable cosmetic dental procedures.
Unlike other cosmetic dental procedures, such as orthodontics or dental crowns, dental veneers allow you to alter your smile’s appearance in a single visit completely. Veneers also tend to be more affordable than other cosmetic dental treatments.

What is the Process for Dental Veneers?
Before beginning your dental veneer treatment, you’ll need to come into our Chattanooga dental office for a brief consultation. During this consultation, Dr. Wilkinson will quickly examine your dental condition to confirm that your teeth and gums are healthy. If Dr. Wilkinson notices any issues, he may recommend a treatment plan before the veneer procedure to ensure that your veneers have a clean and healthy foundation. If your teeth and gums are healthy, he’ll discuss your treatment options with you to determine if dental veneers are right for you.
Consultation and Records
We will take pictures of you and generate a smile simulation to review with you. If you are happy with the simulation, we will take a series of x-rays to make sure the teeth we are working on are healthy. You may also ask for a full exam and we will take a full mouth series of x-rays. We will also take 3D models of your mouth with an intraoral scanner. We will then appoint you for the veneers.
Preparing the Teeth
At this appointment, Dr. Wilkinson will prepare the teeth for the veneers. This does require numbing. We will be placing a mouth prop that also helps us with suction and keeps you safe and comfortable. Dr. Wilkinson will repair any cavities and do any other work that you might need to be done if you would like. Using models generated from the 3D modeling, we will place veneers that reflect the smile design that you approved. The temporaries are an important part of the process. We can make minor changes to them and scan and send that information to the lab.
Creating Your Veneers
The lab receives the digital scan that Dr. Wilkinson took and will make the permanents while you wear your temporary for 2-4 weeks.
Placing Your Veneers
The seat appointment is next. Most people do prefer to be numb for this, but about 25% choose not to be and do fine. We will remove the temps and clean the teeth and try on the veneers to make sure you are happy with them. If you are we will clean the veneers and teeth again. We will then prepare the teeth and veneers to be glued on and then glue them on. They will be glued in place when you leave at 90% strength. It takes 24 hours for the glue to get fully cured, so no sticky food for 24 hours. Veneers can be flossed and cleaned like regular teeth

Your mouth is one of the most important investments that you can make in yourself. Many of our patients find it easier to break up the investment in their mouth into monthly payments. As such we work with Care Credit and Alphaeon to help. There are options ranging from 0% interest for 6 months, up to 60-month terms.

The first appointment is to either look at the whole mouth (Comprehensive Exam) or the smile simulation appointment. Dr. Wilkinson’s first question is always: “What do you want?” Whether you just want reassurance, have a specific need in mind, or are somewhere in between, we want to know so we can best help you. If you were happy with the smile simulation, Dr. Wilkinson will do an intraoral exam (the first exam is always free). Appropriate x-rays will then be taken. A treatment plan will be made that will address any concern you have, and you may then schedule treatment if you would like.
With veneers this is simply not possible. This requires a bit of computer and lab work that cannot be predictably turned around that fast.
We schedule the seat appointment for the permanent veneers 3 weeks after we place your temporaries.
Veneer temporaries typically do not fall off, but they may, on occasion, chip. It is highly unlikely to cause damage but may cut the tongue, and we will want to see you. If it is sharp, we can polish it and assess the issue. Usually, it is not an issue to fix the chip on the temp.
A mild amount of discomfort is expected after veneers at both the preparation appointment and when we seat your permanents, which is usually covered by Advil or Tylenol. The teeth were mildly irritated, as were the gums around the teeth. Sensitivity is usually worst between days 2 and 4. If your bite feels off, please give us a call. Sometimes the temporaries are left a bit high because the bite changes once numbing wears off and needs to be adjusted.
Post-op instructions after preparation (temporary on tooth):
After the preparation of a veneer, the tooth, and the tissue around the tooth and injection site/s might be mildly sore for 4 days, with most pain being reported between days 2 and 4. Most often this is mildly sharp to moderately dull pain that is usually easily manageable with Tylenol or Advil. You will be in temporaries. These temporaries are weaker than the permanent veneers. These temporaries are meant to be gently and cautiously used. They help keep the teeth in position and protect the teeth underneath. If the temporary comes off, or, more likely, chips, please give us a call or send us a text. If it breaks, please give us a call so we can remake it for you. You may lightly brush the temporaries. It won’t be possible to floss them. The temporaries are bonded together between the teeth, which is why you won’t be able to floss the temporaries, but this will not be the case with the permanents, which you will be able to floss.
Post-op instructions after cementation of the permanent crown:
No eating or drinking for 30 minutes after cementation, and no sticky foods for 24 hours. Sensitivity to hot and cold is not uncommon after seating veneers and may persist 7 to 10 days after cementation. If sensitivity feels wrong at any time though, we do recommend that you give us a call or text.
