The Process

At this appointment we will be placing the implants into your bone to allow for the bridge a few months into the future.  Some people choose conscious sedation for this, but most choose local numbing.  We will make sure you are comfortable and then prepare the bone.  The implants and healing caps will be placed below the level of bone, so you can still wear a partial or flipper if you have one.  Sutures will be placed as well, and we will remove them at 2 weeks if they haven't come out on their own by then.  You will need a driver for this appointment if you choose conscious sedation.

We like to see patients at 2 days, 2 weeks and 2 months post-implant placement, at the minimum. Sutures will be removed at 2 weeks and we will be taking x-rays and doing exams to determine how well you are recovering.  Most people require 4 months for the implants to fully heal, but some require 6 months.  These post-op appointments will help us determine when to uncover the implants.

When implants have been placed below the bone and gum, we will have to uncover them.  Most people choose not to have sedation, but it is still an option for this appointment.  We will numb your gums and use a laser or uncover the implants with other means.  We will take a digital impression at that time.  We will place a longer healing cap that will stick through your gum so we won't have to num you when the abutment and crown are finished.  If you have a partial, we will adjust it so that it will comfortably fit over the healing cap.

Yay!  You made it!  Because the healing caps are sticking through the gum now, we typically don't have to numb you.  The healing caps will be unscrewed, which is an odd sensation, but not painful, and permanent implant abutments will be placed.  These will be tightened to an appropriate level and then the bridge will be fitted.  Once it is fitting properly, we will give you the opportunity to look and make sure you like the appearance.  If you are happy, we will seat the implant bridge permanently.  We will clean you up and give you post-op instructions that you can also find here.

We do like to see you one final time to make sure the bite is good and that there aren't any issues with the implants or bridges before resuming regular hygiene recalls.  After everything is good, you can treat this similar to a regular tooth and you will be back on regular hygiene recall only unless another issue arises.

FAQ

Traditional bridges are on natural teeth.  Implant bridges are placed on abutments on top of implants, which were placed in the bone.  People often don't want to damage their natural teeth to restore their smile.  Also, sometime the distance between 2 teeth does not allow for a traditional bridge, so implants may be used.  From an appearance standpoint, there is almost no difference.  Functionally they are essentially identical as well.

Implant bridges are incredibly durable.  They do require the same maintenance as traditional bridges, namely brushing twice a day and flossing, or using a Waterpik.  The implants are made from titanium most of the time, though they might be made of Zirconium if they were done in another country.  Both of those materials are highly durable.

The entire process, from implant placement to the fitting of the implant abutments and bridge, can take several months, as it requires time for the implants to fuse with the jawbone.  If you had to have extractions and bone grafts first, the typical healing time is a minimum of 4 months, with 6 months being common.  Once the implants are placed, they are allowed to heal for an additional 4-6 months.  We will then uncover the implants and may allow 2 weeks for healing if the gums have an issue.  Often times we are able to do our digital impressions for the implant abutments and bridge when we uncover the implants thanks to our soft tissue laser.

Most people in good general health, missing more than three teeth in a row, with sufficient jawbone to support implants and healthy gums, are candidates for this procedure.  We will have to take a 3D CBCT X-ray to 3-dimensionally measure your bone and make sure you are a good candidate.  The consultation, exam and x-rays are free of charge, or we can do a $99 New Patient Cleaning Appointment 🙂

Most patients report feeling minimal discomfort following the implant procedure, especially compared to tooth extraction. Local anesthesia is always used and nitrous(laughing gas) or conscious sedation may used to ensure comfort.  Pain afterwards is usually similar to that of an extraction with an additional pressure sensation for some.  That said, every person is unique, and symptoms range, though mostly it feels like an extraction.  Please note that this is only for the placement part of the implant bridge procedure.  The other appointments are much more straightforward.

Just like your natural teeth, regular brushing, flossing, or Waterpik, and dental check-ups are essential for maintaining the health of your implant bridge.

Success rates vary but are generally high, often above 90%, particularly when performed by an experienced dentist.  Factors that reduce success rates most commonly include smoking and diabetes, with uncontrolled diabetes being a major factor in problems with healing.

Member Implant pricing is $1,397, abutments are $597, and bridge units are $997.  So a 3 unit implant bridge with 2 implants, and 2 abutments would be $6,979.  The abutments are made in house, along with the bridge and may be able to be done on the same day.  If there are additional costs associated with a particular case, those will be detailed in a treatment plan, and prices are subject to change.

As with any surgery, there are some risks, such as infection, damage to other teeth, delayed bone healing, nerve damage, prolonged bleeding, or implant failure. However, these are rare.  In the event of a failure, we will replace the implant free of charge for people that aren't smoking and have been maintaining post-op appointments.

Once healed, it feels almost like your own natural teeth.  Most people don't notice any difference whatsoever after a couple of weeks.

Implant failure can occur, but it's uncommon. Poor oral hygiene, smoking, or pre-existing medical conditions, most commonly uncontrolled Diabetes, can significantly increase the risk.

Yes, it usually takes a few days, 2-4 days on average, to recover from the initial surgery. Complete healing and integration of the implants with the bone takes 4-6 months.  Pain is usually worst at the 2 day mark, getting better by day 4, but sometimes is a bit delayed and takes 4 days to reach maximum inflammation in the healing process.  In addition, this is a process, so ups and downs occur.

No, the materials used in implants do not decay like natural teeth, but it's still crucial to maintain good oral hygiene to keep the gums and surrounding teeth healthy because they are subject to periodontal disease.

Delaying replacement can lead to bone loss in the jaw and shifting of surrounding teeth, potentially leading to further dental issues.  If enough bone is lost, or atrophies, a bone graft might be required, or implant placement won't be possible, and other treatment options will have to be explored.
